Edward Newby
Hello! I am a biology student at UC and multidisciplinary artist.
I enjoy studying things many people overlook. I find all the minute decisions and actions of animal behavior fascinating, whether it be a dog, cat, lizard, or beetle. Working at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden has given me plenty of opportunities to observe many different animals- including humans! I love answering questions about lions and elephants, but what really excites me is getting guests excited about animals they’ve never heard of before! The spotted genet is my favorite animal in the zoo. It’s closest relative in the zoo is the binturong, or “bearcat”!
My fascination with dinosaurs and paleontology started young. Ever since I could read, I was soaking up as many dinosaur factoids as I could. The interaction between arts and sciences is especially exciting in paleontology- humanity wouldn’t be so interested in paleontology if it weren't for the sheer volume of dinosaur artwork. Our popular images of dinosaurs are all man-made, whether it be a painting, a toy, or hulking animatronic figures. There is a distinct fantasy to fossil animals that makes visualizing them beyond bones so enriching as an artist.
I love the weird, nastiness of nature just as much as the obvious beauty. I want to help others appreciate the weird and nasty too. My art is not beautiful or meticulously realistic- but its energetic. Its full of love for the life it venerates. Its messy, sloppy, and all the more honest for it. What you see is exactly what I want you to take away.
