Deinonychus Sketches
Pencil & Digital Illustration
April 2026
These two pencil sketches of Deinonychus playfully contrast two perceptions of dinosaurs- ever-changing extinct animals vs. iconic movie monsters. Their dynamic poses created some frustrating negative space when I scanned them both in, so I added some extra illustrations digitally.
My favorite little factoid about Jurassic Park is that the author, Michael Crichton, initially casted the dreadful raptors as Deinonychus. However, upon learning about Velociraptor, he changed the name of the creatures, but not their size! The Jurassic Park velociraptors both in book and film are still modeled after Deinonychus. These two dinosaurs have easily undergone the most obvious change as paleontology evolves with new discoveries. It is interesting to note that the concept of feathered dinosaurs predates Jurassic Park by decades, they just haven’t caught on in popular media until recently.
