Spiderwort
1.5 x .8 ft
Wire and Recycled Fabric
July 2025
This soft purple spider takes its beautiful colors from the invasive wildflower, Spiderwort. In theme, it is inspired by the Sweet Alyssum- “Worth Beyond Beauty”. While not as appealing as a flower, the humble spider is a crucial part of every ecosystem they find themselves in. While invasive species may choke out native species, spiders kill invasive insects.
Covering the spider is a thrifted woven purple and golden fabric. These colors are contrasted by black fur on the legs and on the underside of the abdomen. The fabric on the legs and head were hand-sewed onto the skeleton while the abdomen was machine sewed. There is a hard metal skeleton underneath the ornate purple fabric, it consists of one straight rod through the head and abdomen and all 8 of its legs. Part of the rods are uncovered by black fur to mimic the natural taper of a spider’s leg. Its face is complete with 8 white beady eyes and two furry pedipalps.
Spiderwort was a part of the Invasive Plant Sculpture Garden at the Harriet Beecher-Stowe House from August to September 2025.
