Leaellynasaura

Digital Illustration

October 2025

Leaellynasaura is a small, distant relative to the large Iguanodontids. It is notable for its extraordinary tail, nearly 3 times the length of its body. Not much is known about it besides it being found in Australia, which was within the Antarctic Circle during the early cretaceous. Some paleontologists and many artists theorize that this animal was insulated with feathers to survive the cold.

This was a simple digital doodle where I played around with line weight to simulate a lino-block print. I like the bold yet simple gesture paired with that otherworldly stare I see in small mammals. The body of this creature was inspired by the Australian blue penguin.
