Linoleum Block Print

April 2026

This series of prints explores negative and positive space through spirals and spikes. Polynesian tattoo work was my primary reference.

The miscellaneous extinct animals chosen for this series are characterized by distinct shape language. It was an invaluable exercise in thinking in negative space before positive. The initial designs were illustrated digitally and then transferred to linoleum by tracing paper. Each animal is its own separate linoleum stamp, ranging about 3×4 inches each. I thought this would be easier to print, and less wasteful of linoleum- but it made inking the stamps difficult. As a result, I went through many tests with the stamps before settling on the final prints. Carving in such a small scale was also difficult, but I enjoyed the challenge.

Originally, these designs were made in April 2025, intended to be printed on fabric as patches. I decided that paper would be the more reliable matrix to clearly show the imagery. I intend to continue using these designs for patches and other printing projects down the line.
